This website is to help people who are learning English to understand more about the basic grammar patterns of English.
Teaching English monks in a Buddhist monastery in Bhutan
I am an English Language teacher and have taught English in Europe, Asia and Australia for about thirty years. I currently teach English at Murwillumbah, NSW, Australia.
I am passionate about learning and teaching languages, and I am especially interested in how grammar can make the immense job of learning a language easier – not harder!
I’m also very interested in how a learner’s first language affects their acquisition of other languages, particularly when the language being learned and the learner’s mother tongue belong to different language families, and therefore have completely different grammar systems.
Seeing the difficulties some students have with English grammar, particularly those whose first language is unrelated to English, has been the main reason I have created this website.
The information in this website is based on research from a range of books and online resources,
but the main sources were: A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language by Quirk, Greenbaum, Leech, and Svartvik. Longman, 1985
and COBUILD English Grammar, Collins, 1990.
